Eyelash Extensions 101: Everything You Need to Know
Have you ever wondered how to get awe-worthy long eyelashes? Eyelash extensions have become an increasingly popular alternative to fake eyelashes that you have to apply everyday. Because nobody has time for that! Eyelash extensions are a more permanent, long-term solution to make your lashes more dramatic.
Here, we break down the different types of eyelash extensions, how they are applied, and more FAQs. Read all the way through for our recommendations of the best spas in Hong Kong for eyelash extensions.
What are the most popular types of eyelash extensions?
These three types of lash extensions are most common: synthetic, silk, and mink.
Synthetic eyelashes are made from a polished acrylic. They are the sturdiest of all three and appear glossier than the mink or silk. Since they are firm, they hold their curl really well. One criticism is that they don’t appear as “soft” or “natural-looking” as silk or mink extensions. Since they’re heavier in weight, it’s not recommended that you wear synthetic lash extensions long term.
Silk eyelash extensions are a medium weight and are softer than synthetic ones. They will last slightly longer and can appear either natural or dramatic, depending on how they are applied and the thickness you choose. If you have naturally fine or weak lashes, silk eyelash extensions are better for you because they are lighter weight. They come in a variety of curls and lengths and are ideal for those wanting a more natural look.
Mink lashes are very fine and silky. If you are against animal cruelty, there are a lot of spas that offer faux-mink lashes made from man-made fibers that imitate real mink fur. Lately, mink lashes have picked up in popularity, because they’re the most lightweight. They are so natural that they feel like your own lashes. They are shinier than silk lashes and last a long time. Because they are so light, you’ll notice that they don’t droop or twist even after a significant amount of time has passed. They take longer to apply, but the result is definitely worth it.
How are they applied?
Once you choose the type and size you want (usually between 6mm to 17mm), the lashes are applied one at a time. Special semi-permanent glue is used to stick on the lashes. Applying a full set of lashes takes around two hours. It’s recommended that you get a touch-up once every three to four weeks. You can also consider getting half a set of lashes, to fill in or thicken your natural lashes.
Depending on your own eyelashes and their condition, lash experts can only apply a certain length or thickness. If it’s your first time trying them or you’re unsure of exactly what to get, you can always try a half set of lashes and add more later.
How often do you need to get them redone?
Just like your natural lashes, they will grow out after six to eight weeks. Since each extension is attached to an individual eyelash, they will fall out naturally as your eyelashes grow out. Of course, it depends on the individual. We highly advise you not to pick them or try to pull them out yourself. As recommended before, a touch-up every three to four weeks is good.
Is there anything you should avoid while wearing eyelash extensions?
After getting your eyelash extensions applied or touched up, definitely stay away from water for the first 12 to 24 hours. Water can weaken the glue before it has time to set and cause lashes to fall off. If you have sensitive eyes, oil-based products or makeup removers on or around the eyes are not recommended. Also, stay way from water-proof mascara, since it can actually pull of the lashes prematurely when removed.
Is it okay to wear mascara?
We recommend you only use mascara on the tips of the extensions. Apply it very lightly, just enough to help your eyes pop.
Do eyelash extensions damage your natural lashes?
The good news is that eyelash extensions will not harm your natural lashes. They are completely safe, so long as you don’t rub your eyes or pull on the extensions.
