Transitioning Your Skin Care Routine from Summer to Fall

Transitioning Your Skin Care Routine from Summer to Fall

After mid-autumn festival, you’ll start to notice a slight change in the Hong Kong weather. As the air starts to cool off bit by bit and the days get shorter, we feel a shift in the season. And just as you start to change what you wear, you should also think about changing your skin care routine. The cooler, slightly drier weather means your skin will demand extra attention and care. So, here are some skincare tips for how to effectively transition your skin care routine from summer to fall.

1. Listen to Your Skin

Be intuitive. As the environment changes, so will your skin. Keep an eye out for sensitivity, dryness, or blemishes. I definitely recommend a good, rich night cream to rehydrate your skin at night. It will help to replace the moisture lost throughout the day, from the air conditioning or drastic outside temperatures. I always feel the wind makes my skin feel extra tight, so I like to add a moisturiser in the morning and at night in the fall.

2. Switch to a Different Moisturizer

While a lightweight moisturiser with sunscreen may cut it in the summer, it likely won’t be enough for the fall. Opt for a slightly denser moisturiser and your skin will thank you. A little tip is to apply a hydrating cream immediately after washing your face, to make sure your skin retains the most moisture and reaps the benefits.

3. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

You may think there’s no need for sunscreen, when the skies are grey. But be aware that protecting your skin from the sun is a year-round job. You should apply a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 or higher daily. Reapply sunscreen after sweating, or every couple of hours. I like to carry around a small travel-size moisturiser that contains sunscreen in my purse at all times. Also, I am always sure to have a face mist handy. If you can see a shadow, then that means you’re getting sun. So be aware and take care of your skin!

4. Use a Face Mask

I love spending a night at home, pampering my skin with a face mask. This is something I also do year round, but I find especially helpful in the fall. Since your skin may become especially dry, red, and sensitive in the fall, you may notice the irritation. Especially after a summer spent exposed to the sun, chlorine from the pool, and salt from the ocean, your skin will really benefit from a face mask.

Try an overnight mask containing moisturising oils that can help add extra hydration to your skin. Unlike regular face masks, you leave it on overnight. They are usually especially luxurious and creamy, cradling your skin and maximising its benefits. You’ll notice your skin will look instantly more radiant and glow.

5. Get a Facial

Your skin deserves some serious pampering. After withstanding the extreme temperatures and environmental conditions over the summer, there’s nothing like a facial to treat yourself. And your skin for that matter.

6. Apply a Facial Oil

Your skin produces less oil in the winter, so you will definitely want to help restore the moisture. You may find it is exactly what your skin needs. Smooth a facial oil on before your moisturiser. Or, mix a few drops of facial oil with your moisturiser and apply it all at once.

7. Watch Your Showering Habits

What do showers have to do with your skin? You’re probably wondering this. Well, extensive showering can actually exacerbate and dehydrate your skin. Try to limits your showers and baths to less than 10 minutes. This will help keep your skin hydrated. Also, it’s better to wash your skin with lukewarm, not hot water. Luckily it doesn’t get too cold here in Hong Kong, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

I am really looking forward to the cooler months. As you can feel the season change, be sure to be aware of how your skin looks and feels. There’s nothing like your own body clock to alert you to when your skin is feeling dry, irritated, or bothered. The most important thing is to just be aware and be intuitive. Keep wearing sunscreen, keep your skin hydrated, and get a facial (at least one!).
